Race by Stonestreet Stables | Training Graduate
Few things are as satisfying as a homebred Grade 1 winner, and Tara’s Tango is just that. Trained by Jerry Hollendorfer, Tara’s Tango broke her maiden at Del Mar in her only start at 2. At 3, she was second three times in a row in the Santa Paula Stakes, Angels Flight Stakes, and G2 Summertime Oaks, losing the latter by a nose to Stellar Wind. At 4, the Stonestreet color bearer came into her own and won a trio of graded stakes, the G2 Santa Maria Stakes at 1 1/16 miles, the G1 Santa Margarita Stakes at 1 1/8 miles and the G3 Rancho Bernardo Handicap at 6 ½ furlongs. Her final start was a close fourth in the 2016 G1 Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint.
A daughter of Unbridled’s Song, Tara’s Tango is one of that great sire’s 21 G1 winners, which includes Midshipman, Embur’s Song, Octave, Arrogate, Unrivaled Belle, Unbridled Elaine, Forever Unbridled, Liam’s Map and others. Unbridled’s Song is now one of the great modern broodmare sires. His daughters have produced over 115 black-type winners to date including G1 winners Better Than Ever, Tourist, Carpe Diem, General Quarters, Stonetsatic, The Lumber Guy, Once Were Wild and others.
Tara’s Tango is the best runner of 7 winners, 3 stakes winners, out of her dam, stakes-placed Scarlet Tango (by French Deputy), which Stonestreet purchased for $850,000 at the 2008 Keeneland November Sale. Tara’s Tango is a half-sister to Visionaire (by Grand Slam), winner of the G1 King’s Bishop Stakes and G3 Gotham Stakes, Scarlet Strike (by Smart Strike), winner of the G3 Providencia Stakes, and Madison’s Luna, winner of the G3 Hutcheson Stakes. The next dam is the stakes winner Silver Tango, herself dam of a pair of stakes winners Dale’s Prospect and Our Commander.
Tara’s Tango had her first foal in 2018, a colt by Medaglia d’Oro. The handsome colt would go on to sell for $2,150,000 to Godolphin at the 2019 Keeneland September Sale. Her 2019, a colt by Tapit, was also well received at the sales and topped the 2020 Keeneland September Sale with a final price of $2,000,000.
That sales topper, later named Capensis, scored his debut victory by five lengths at Belmont Park. In just his third start, Capensis kicked clear to win the G3 New Kent County Virginia Derby at Colonial Downs.
