Brilliantly fast Kauai Katie was bred by Spendthrift Farm, and we purchased her for $490,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Florida March Sale of 2-year-olds. She won first time out, wiring her field by 12 lengths at Saratoga, won the G2 Adirondack under a hand ride, and then the G2 Matron by 7 ½ lengths. In the G1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies, Katie dueled with Beholder but gave way to finish fourth. At three, she won 3 straight, the G3 Old Hat by 8 lengths, the G2 Forward Gal by 5 ½, and the Road Princess Stakes by 3 ½. In the G1 Acorn Stakes, after a stumbling start, Kauai Katie was third behind Midnight Lucky and Close Hatches, but after another bad start was unplaced in the G1 Prioress. Returning at four from a 9-month layoff, Katie was second in the G2 Distaff Handicap to La Verdad, and fourth in the G3 Vagrancy Handicap before retiring. Her final record reads 6 wins from 11 starts and $716,500.
Kauai Katie is a daughter of the elite Malibu Moon, sire of champion Declan’s Moon, G1 Kentucky Derby winner Orb, and seven G1-winning fillies including Life At Ten. As a top filly sire, it’s no surprise that he’s making an early mark as a broodmare sire, with his daughters producing runners like G1 winners My Conquestadory and By The Moon as well as champion Stellar Wind.
She is the second stakes winner out of her dam, More Than Pretty, who also produced the black type winner Winding Way (2009 f. by Malibu Moon). More Than Pretty and her half-sister Ingrid the Gambler are the only named foals produced by Pretty Livia, and both were stakes winners.
